Reading Responses

Each session this semester you have a secondary source assigned (aside from the Duchamp session, where I give you a pause). These are advanced readings that dig deeper on a specific topic related to the more general chapters from Art Since 1900 and the lectures.

Out of these 12 secondary readings you will pick 5 to write reading responses. These should be 2-3 pages double-spaced with a Times font. Like the discussion leading on these readings, I am not looking for a synopsis or summary of the text. Instead, I am looking for a critical analysis of the argument and an exploration of a specific issue in the text. In other words, you do not have to account for the whole text; rather, you should focus on a specific issue that bears on the argument in some way.

These responses are a chance to offer your own thoughts. You can agree with the author, while in the process offer a new direction or idea the author did not see. Conversely, you can disagree with the author, in which case you need to back up your criticism of the author’s argument with specific and compelling evidence. Or, you can do a mix of both. Feel free to insert an image or two should it be helpful for reference.

These are graded: a response that shows independent thinking in its specific engagement with the text, with very little writing errors, is in the A range; a response that merely summarizes the text and does not offer independent thinking, yet accounts for the argument and contains only a few writing errors, is in the B range; a response that summarizes the text in a general way without accounting for the argument and with many writing errors is in the C range.

You are free to choose whichever 5 readings/sessions you like to respond to (which can include the ones you discussion lead), though make sure that you have submitted at least 2 responses by June 22. Be forewarned, however, that once we convene for a session, the corresponding text is no longer available for a response. In other words, the responses you choose are due on or before the subsequent day/session (so, if you choose to respond to the Wright reading from 6/8, it is due no later than 6/13. This gives you time to incorporate the ideas and approaches that come to you from our zoom sessions and discussion leadings)
